“SAHS Old Girl” Carleen Gardner, was re-elected by acclamation to serve on the International Civil Service Commission of the United Nations (ICSC), for the period 2015 – 2018, during the 69th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The International Civil Service Commission was established by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in 1974, as an independent expert body with the mandate to regulate and coordinate the conditions of service of staff within the UN and its specialised agencies and other international organisations that participate in the UN common system. Jamaica’s participation in the Commission therefore allows for direct influence in the deliberations on matters relating to the welfare of staff, as well as the personal and professional development of the personnel that manage the day-to-day work of the United Nations.
Mrs. Gardner, who will serve in her personal capacity, was re-elected based on her recognised competence and substantial experience in public administration, including human resources management. Mrs. Gardner’s candidacy was endorsed by the Latin American and Caribbean Group of States (GRULAC). She was previously elected to the body for the period 2011 – 2014.
Senator the Honourable Arnold J. Nicholson, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, in congratulating Mrs. Gardner, said that “The re-election of Mrs. Gardner reflects the confidence of the Member States of the United Nations in her capacity to contribute, not only to the work of the Commission, but also to the wider UN system.” The Minister thanked her for her hard work and dedication, and also expressed the assurance that Mrs. Gardner would “continue to excel and represent Jamaica with distinction”.
